But what does “a good or a better life” mean? The second edition of How’s Life? paints a comprehensive picture of well-being in OECD countries and other major economies, by looking at people’s material living conditions and quality of life across the population. In addition, the report contains in-depth studies of four key cross-cutting issues in well-being that are particularly relevant: how has well-being evolved during the global economic and financial crisis?; how big are gender differences in well-being?; how can we assess well-being in the workplace?; and how to define and measure the sustainability of well-being over time?   </p> <p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;line-height:18px;"> Content:<br /> 1. The OECD Better Life Initiative: Concepts and indicators   <br /> What drives people's and nations' well-being and where do countries need to improve to achieve greater progress for all? The OECD Better Life Initiative launched in 2011 addresses these questions by measuring well-being outcomes in 11 dimensions.   <br /><br /> 2. How's Life? at a glance     <br /> This chapter shows that OECD countries have made considerable progress in many well-being areas over the past 20 years or so, although progress has been uneven across the 11 dimensions included in the OECD well-being framework. Similarly, there is great diversity in patterns amongst different countries as well as disparity in well-being achievements of different groups of the population within a country. </p> <p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;line-height:18px;">3. Well-being and the global financial crisis     <br /> This chapter analyses how well-being has changed during the global economic and financial crisis. Even though some effects of the crisis may become visible only in the long-term, the report finds that the crisis has had large implications for some economic and non-economic aspects of people's well-being. Clear negative trends have emerged in subjective well-being and civic engagement, with increasing levels of stress, lower life satisfaction and decreasing trust in national governments.   <br /><br /> 4. Gender differences in well-being: Can women and men have it all?     <br /> The chapter looks at gender differences in well-being, showing that the traditional gender gap in favour of men has narrowed but has not disappeared. It also finds that women and men do well in different areas of well-being and that they are increasingly sharing tasks and roles.</p> <p style="font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;line-height:18px;">5. Well-being in the workplace: Measuring job quality     <br /> This chapter looks at the quality of employment and well-being in the workplace. Measuring the sustainability of well-being over time     <br /> The last chapter of the report studies the links between current and future well-being. The wide-ranging report ranks countries on a range of criteria from housing and health to crime and social engagement.  </p> <p>Income inequality was highest in Chile, Mexico and the Russian Federation – and lowest in Eastern European and Nordic countries. The UK's income inequality was above the OECD average and has risen over the last 15 years.</p> <p><strong>Life satisfaction </strong>is highest in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. People in Hungary, Portugal and Greece report the lowest levels of life satisfaction. At this meeting, states agreed to accelerate current MDG efforts and to launch next year international negotiations leading to the adoption of a new development framework.  Global Development Goals offers analysis and recommendations in both these areas. It considers the context in which the MDGs were developed, assesses progress to date by analysing the individual goals. Moreover, it looks at the relationship between governance and progress, and why governance is placed at the heart of the post-2015 framework. Furthermore, it offers views on achieving the 2015 targets, and provides insights into the creation of the post-2015 agenda. In response, UNESCO through its Institute for Statistics (UIS) and the Center for Universal Education (CUE) at the Brookings Institution have co-convened the Learning Metrics Task Force (LMTF). The project’s main objective is to shift the focus of global education debates from access to access plus learning. Based on input from technical working groups and global consultations, the task force will make recommendations to help countries and international organizations measure and improve learning outcomes for children and youth worldwide.</p> <p>Drawing on the framework set forth in Phase I, the task force considered approaches for measuring learning in all seven domains and at each of the three stages of learning (early childhood, primary and lower secondary).  Based on the technical recommendations from the Measures and Methods Working Group and input from global consultation, the task force decided on six areas of measurement for tracking at the global level while also recommending strategies to improve assessment of progress toward national educational goals. The task force utilized feedback from over 600 individuals in 57 countries to identify areas of measurement that are both feasible and desirable for tracking to fill the global data gap on learning.<br /><br /> The final Phase II recommendations from the task force are presented in its second report entitled, Toward Universal Learning: A Global Framework for Measuring Learning, which outlines a global vision for how learning should be measured around the world.
