In March 2012 the first regional Exchange of National Experiences in Governance Assessments was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The "Experts Roundtable and South-South Exchange Forum" on “Lessons from Assessing Governance: Towards Inclusive Democracies and Development in Asia” was organised by the UNDP Asia-Pacific Regional Centre and the UNDP’s Global Programme on Democratic Governance Assessments, the Oslo Governance Center. This expert roundtable showcased the experiences of national counterparts in developing governance assessments.

The forum gathered representatives of civil society, national and sub-national governments, academic and research institutions from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Vanuatu, the Philippines, and Thailand. Lessons were shared by the five pilot countries in Asia where governance assessment initiatives have taken place so far, namely Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Viet Nam.

Through the Global Programme on Democratic Governance Assessments (GAP), UNDP assists developing countries in producing disaggregated and non-ranking governance indicators to enable national stakeholders to better monitor performance toward democratic governance reforms. In meeting this objective, the capacities of national stakeholders are strengthened in the collection, maintenance and analysis of governance-related data.
