The Guide to Human Rights Impact Assessment and Management  (HRIAM) has been developed as an online tool for companies committed to assessing and managing the human rights risks and impacts of their business activities. In particular, the Guide to HRIAM provides guidance on how to: Identify and assess potential and/or existing  human rights risks and impacts Implement mitigation action plans to address  human rights risks and impacts Integrate the results and lessons learned from the  assessment into the company’s management system.

The Guide to HRIAM is divided into seven stages:

  • Preparation
  • Identification
  • Engagement
  • Assessment
  • Mitigation
  • Management
  • Evaluation

The Guide to HRIAM offers guidance to companies of any size,  industry sector, and/or country of origin and operation.  In particular, some high risk environments and situations may  require a human rights impact assessment, for example: A weak governance zone; A fragile and/or conflict-affected country; A country where human rights commitments  are poorly implemented;  An area with high environmental and/ or social risks and impacts; An area inhabited by vulnerable local  communities (e.g. indigenous people)
