NEW:Workshop on Data Collection in Senegal
24-26 June
For the purpose of strengthening the quality of governance monitoring in Senegal, the coordinating unit (DREAT) steering the implementation of the national governance programme has embarked on a participatory process for developing a monitoring framework. During this second workshop experiences from the Indonesian Governance Index were shared for cross-fertilization on data collection methods.

NEW: Developing Governance Indicators for Iraq

Developing governance indicators for a complex post-conflict situation like Iraq is truly ground-breaking work. There are no existing models, no ready-made assessment frameworks available globally that can be easily applied to such contexts. As such, the pioneering efforts of the Iraqi Government in developing a national governance monitoring system can provide invaluable direction to nascent efforts in other countries and regions which are similarly affected by conflict.

Regional workshop on Governance Assessments in Latin America and the Carribean
18-19 June 2010
Latin America has been a pioneering region in several areas of democratic governance, including governance assessments. Many of its countries are celebrating the bicentenary of their independence from European colonial rule, and around twenty years of uninterrupted freedom from authoritarian regimes. But at this time of remembrance of their history of struggle for freedom, the countries of the region may yet have to lead a struggle that could be even more challenging, because less visible: social inequalities there are of the most extreme in the world, and democracies that are fully recognized on paper are being questioned on their actual effectiveness.

NEW: Assessing Integrity in the Water Sector in Tajikistan

Tajikistan is the 5th most water-rich country in the world, but only 59% of its population has access to safe drinking water (47% in the rural areas). In spite of its rich water resources, the country has the worst access to safe drinking water in Central Asia. Clearly, the problem is not one of availability – it is one of governance. Read more
Atelier sur l’évaluation de la gouvernance locale: Projet d’appui à la mise en place d’un cadre d’évaluation de la gouvernance territoriale au Maroc
25 au 28 janvier 2010
L’Observatoire National du Développement Humain (ONDH) désire développer, à travers une approche partenariale, un cadre d’évaluation de la gouvernance locale au Maroc. L’ONDH voudrait, par une démarche d’évaluation de la gouvernance locale, arriver à éclaircir la contribution des principes de bonne gouvernance au niveau territorial aux avancées du développement humain au Maroc. Au final, les résultats de ces évaluations pourraient alimenter un système de veille mais aussi être utilisés par des institutions partenaires à des fins de renforcement des capacités des acteurs locaux ou de réformes des modes d’action publique au niveau territorial..

Workshop for Anti-Corruption Agencies: Country-owned assessments in support of national anti-corruption strategies

Representatives from the anti-corruption agencies (ACAs) of Kosovo/1244, FYR Macedonia, Montenegro and Turkey gathered for this workshop organized in Oslo in collaboration with the Regional Centre in Bratislava. This workshop was held in response to a growing demand and interest on the part of ACAs in strengthening their monitoring capacities. read more
Workshop in Cairo: Assessment Methods and Application in Policy Making
1-4 June 2009
This workshop hosted by the Egyptian Cabinet think tank, Information and Decision Support Centre, and UNDP, discussed tools, frameworks and approaches for measuring governance in sectors, such as water and the pharmaceutical sector. Strengthening responsive institutions for service delivery is critical for achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Roundtable in Cairo: Evidence on Governance in Policy
18-19 January 2009
Hosted by UNDP and IDRC Canada, this roundtable entitled "Evidence on Governance into Policy: The Role of Research Institutes and Think Tanks" was organized as a side-event of the Information and Decision Support Center IDSC International Conference on "The role of think tanks in developing countries" in Cairo. The workshop produced nine discussion papers that include country case studies of Nepal, Peru, Serbia, China and Sudan, as well as a paper looking at the APRM.
